Composition in film refers to how objects appear in the frame. Where they’re placed, whether they’re in the foreground or background, how close to the lense they are etc. There are many components in composition including:
Leading lines. Leading lines is where the natural lines lead the eye around the picture. in this frame the lines of the side of the road and the wall lead up the path to where the men are walking. It creates mystery and suspense, it creates the questions, where are the men going? what’s over the hill? The composition helps create tension and mystery, also makes a sense of adventure for the audience.
This shot uses both framing and symmetry. The bamboo trees are used to frame the 3 main characters in this frame but excludes the rest in the back making these 3 more important. This in itself creates many questions about this scene. Another use of composition used is symmetry, the way it is very symmetrical makes it seem almost military like, adding a battle/war atmosphere to the scene. The mixture of these makes the trees feel like channels or pathways that the people can run through at the start of what could be a war.

This frame takes advantage of rule of thirds. The way the two main aspects of this image lie on the two vertical lines. This draws the audiences eyes to these two objects making them feel significant. It also makes the image feel very aesthetically pleasing due to the tree and man being the same width apart. The way he is alone in the desert pointing his sword towards the tree could symbolise that he is fighting not with people but the desert itself, trying to survive.
Excellent stuff here, Matthew — I think this is the best work you posted so far. You’ve demonstrated a good understanding of the conventions of composition, and used this to draw a good understanding from the context of the film. All in all, it’s really good work and I’m pleased with both the knowledge and empathy you’ve demonstrated, and also the effort you’ve made. Good work! I’d like to see this level of effort in your future analyses/evaluations, please — you’re showing good skills here — keep them coming!
