Project Proposal

Today we have started our research projects. I am doing mine about different types of camera equipment, mounts and grips. I will try and improve my skills using things such as the steady cam, jib and slider.

What is the name of my project?

Improving my skills when using camera equipment.

What will I do?

The one thing I really want to improve on is using the steady cam. I haven’t really had an opportunity to use it properly. I will try and learn all the tips and tricks to make my shot as effective as possible.

One other type of equipment I want to try and improve my skills when using the dolly. I will learn how to pull the focus well when using the dolly. It is helpful because Callan is doing a similar project to me, he can help me use dollys. It will also help with the steady cams because he would be able to record me walking with it, I’d be able to improve my stance when walking with it after seeing what I meed to improve.

The final piece of equipment I especially want to improve on is working the jib. I want to be able to be able to change the escalation of the camera to try and get a unique angle.

Why is this topic important for me?

This topic is very important to me because it is a very possible career path that I’d like to go down. Learning to use these types of camera equipment now could set me up very well for later in life. I’d either like to film in programmes similar to Plant Earth, I would also like to film at sporting events using the steady cams.

 

What sort of research sources will I use?

The primary way I will get research is practical tests. By using the equipment first hand in person will help my skills massively. Another type of research I will do is that I’ll watch lots of video tutorials and read lots of books. I will pay attention in films and try and pay attention to the camera work and see how I can intemperate the techniques into my films. I will try and find someones work who I will aspire to.

What will the biggest challenges be?

I think that the biggest challenge we will face is that the camera equipment here at college is very average. they are no where near top of the range so my shot choice isn’t going to be as good as it could be. It will be quite hard to overcome these challenges. I will try my best to get the best out of the equipment that have.

What will you learn?

I will learn many different types of camera movements and will be a lot more comfortable when using different types of camera equipment. I will learn how to use them effectively and it will set me up for later in life when I eventually get into film using these types of equipment.
