Equipment Testing – Week 2

This is a very very rough edit of what Chris, Callan and I did at the skate park Monday afternoon. We just went out so I could get to grips with the equipment. We only took the slider and steadicam, I would have taken the jib and dolly too but thought there wouldn’t be much point due to us only being there for an hour or so, I also thought they wouldn’t be used swell as they could have in that restricted area.

As you can see there is a lot to improve on. I need to work on both the slider and steadicam. I think more so the steadicam. With the slider I can easily improve. I noticed that I was hitting the end of the tracks a lot, making the camera jolt, ruining the shot. All I need to do for this is ether extend the slider next time, or be more aware of how long the tracks are and try and focus on the shot as well as the equipment. I could also do better by trying more test shots and seeing how fast I should move the camera.

With the steadicam on the other hand, I will need to practice with it to improve. After filming everything and reviewing the footage I realised I was paying attention more on where I was walking and trying not to fall over tan focussing on the shot. Even looking where I was going for a couple of seconds the camera could pan away from the subject.

Good lessons here Matthew — well done for this. I’d love to see you acknowledging this/reflecting on this when you come to your next test.
