Week 4

This is the final rough edit of the film we did in half term. There a lot of things that I can take from this film, both positive and negative. Some of the positives are that my glidecam shots have improved massively.

For example, this shot is one of my favourites from the weekend. I used the glide cam to create a sense of juxtaposition as I am going in the opposite direction to Callan on the bike. I go from left to right and he goes from right to left. The way I’m moving across the track makes a huge dynamic movement which contributes to the shot a lot – making it more exciting and it also makes the audience feel more involved in the shot.

This was another one of my favourite shots. Although it isn’t fast and high action its still a nice slow shot. It is a little bit wobbly but it is still a lot better than some of my older shots from my last film. It is still a little bit wobbly, I an improve this by using the techniques I learned over half term, by tapping the shaft of the glide cam instead of holding it and it translating my bodies movement into the stabalizer.

Another positive thing I took from this film is that I came up with some really good shots with the dolly.

This has got to be one of my favourite shots from the shoot. The movement of the camera moving in the opposite direction to the bike makes it really visually appealing. It is also at the right speed where I don’t run out of tracks midway through the shot. It is really smooth swell with no sticks and twigs getting in the way of the tracks. The one thing that could be improved is I could have lowered the angle of the camera just a little bit more to get more of Callan in the shot as he exits the frame. I feel like have improved a lot with the dolly since I last used it a couple on months closer to the start of the college year. Last time I used it the movement wasn’t very consistent, kind of like some of my slider shots now, I use to struggle to keep a consistent speed.

However there is a lot of things that I could improve – not just when using the equipment. I need to learn to double check all the settings on the camera instead of completely focussing on equipment. After we finished filming we had realises we had been filming at 50 FPS instead of 25 FPS. Also when we entered the woods I didn’t change any of the settings so it is quite dark, I should have really adjusted the ISO, aperture and all of the settings like that.

Boom! Again, Matty, this is really good — much, much better reflections from you. I’m glad to see your knowledge of the camera and exposure triangle improving organically as you develop the rigs and camera movement. Your timing and composition are improving too. Great work and please keep it coming.
